How to Choose a Gaming SSD
- Interface: Match the drive to your board; PCIe Gen4 is the mainstream sweet spot, while Gen5 offers extreme speed for the latest platforms.
- Capacity: 1TB is the practical minimum as game sizes balloon, with 2TB giving comfortable room for a larger library.
- Console compatibility: For PS5 expansion, look for a Gen4 drive with a heatsink that meets Sony’s speed requirements.
- Sustained speed: Beyond peak numbers, consistent performance under load matters for smooth game loading and installs.
- Cooling: A heatsink helps high-speed drives avoid thermal throttling, especially in cramped or console installations.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a Gen5 SSD for gaming?
Not yet. Gen4 drives already load games extremely fast, and current titles rarely saturate Gen5 speeds, though Gen5 future-proofs the latest builds.
How much SSD capacity do I need?
1TB is the sensible minimum given growing game sizes, while 2TB, like the Samsung 990 PRO, gives comfortable room for a larger library.
Which SSD is best for PS5 expansion?
A licensed Gen4 drive with a heatsink, like the WD_Black SN850P, meets Sony’s requirements and installs without any extra cooling to source.
Does an SSD improve frame rates?
Not directly, but it slashes load times and enables smooth asset streaming, eliminating stutters in games that constantly load new areas.
